Here we see the principal of connection-oriented transmission between two mobile subscribers. The duplex traffic flows by two different frequency bands along the upward and downward links.

Should the two subscribers not be in the field vision one of the same satellite the call is connected by an inter-satellite link, which can also include other space stations as relays, though these are not shown here. Even if the subscribers are located within the antenna focus of a single satellite extensive switching procedures will be necessary between the individual beams. The inter-satellite link is also switched dynamically during existence of a connection as a satellite integration changing very quickly.

The situation explained using example telephony applied to all connection-oriented services such as telex and real time data transmission.
